Art that addresses and borrows from science and technology is nothing new in contemporary art, but images of artificial flight probably rank highest in the category. This show brings together pieces from 20 artists and a dozen artifacts from the Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock, TX and the Commemorative Air force Museum in Midland, TX ( http://www.commemorativeairforce.org/ ). The art in this show deals with many aspects of flight: childhood infatuations with model planes, fantasy images, technical interest in construction and materials, nostalgia, commentary on the role of military technology in society, and even to the more metaphysical aspirations of transcendence. The functional objects on loan from the regional air museums were selected mostly for their aesthetic appeal, and seeing them in conjunction with the selected art celebrates the connection between form and function. |
